Uncover the hidden gem along North Africa’s Mediterranean coast: Tunisia. Experience the seaside villages, mountain oases, and Saharan dunes that made this tiny land coveted by legendary civilizations—Phoenician, Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Ottoman, and French—all of them leaving behind treasures for you to admire. Imagine standing in the imperial city of Carthage, where Hannibal once commanded forces against Rome. Begin in Tunis, Tunisia’s modern-day capital near ancient Carthage, and join an expert guide to explore Carthage’s layers of archaeological remains. Throughout the journey, marvel at the most exquisite Roman ruins outside Italy, including Dougga, North Africa’s most complete Roman city, and the 35,000-seat Amphitheatre of El Jem, which rivals Rome’s Colosseum in scale and state of preservation. Step back to when Tunisia was the jewel of the Islamic world in Kairouan, one of Islam’s holiest cities and home to one of the world’s most important medieval mosques.
