How does one story change two industries? Darnell Hunt (M.A. ’91, Ph.D. ’94) has done just that—redefining representation in Hollywood and advancing equity in higher education.

Darnell Hunt (Bruin story since M.A. ’91, Ph.D. ’94) began his professional journey in a newsroom in Washington, D.C., where he witnessed firsthand the stark racial disparities in media. This eye-opening experience ignited his commitment to social inquiry. His journey led him to pursue graduate studies at UCLA during the pivotal moment of the 1992 Los Angeles uprisings, further informing his research and exploration of social inequities.

His research led to the creation of the UCLA Hollywood Diversity Report. Through this report, Hunt has established a national standard for analyzing the impact of on-screen diversity on the success of films and television shows. His work continues to challenge industry norms and fuels discussions about structural inequality, providing clarity and insights supported by data.
As Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, Hunt serves as UCLA’s chief academic officer, responsible for overseeing academic programs and policies. Before assuming this university-wide leadership role, he served as Dean of Social Sciences and Chair of the UCLA Department of Sociology, championing equity, inclusion, and the public mission of scholarship.
