Leslie Gilbert-Lurie’s story may have started at UCLA, but that was only the catalyst. As an accomplished attorney, author, and advocate, her dynamic career has reshaped education, challenged legal boundaries, and driven social progress. As a daughter of a Holocaust survivor, Leslie’s deep understanding of life’s fragility has fueled her unwavering commitment to creating meaningful change.

Her impact resonates across multiple spheres. As a civil rights lawyer (Bruin story since ’81, JD ’84) she championed landmark cases that expanded educational opportunities for underserved communities. Serving as President of the Los Angeles County Board of Education, she spearheaded transformative changes in public education throughout Los Angeles. In 2022, California Governor Gavin Newsom appointed her to the California State University Board of Trustees, where she helps guide one of the nation’s largest public university systems.

Leslie’s voice extends through her powerful memoir, “Bending Toward the Sun: A Mother and Daughter Memoir,” weaving together themes of resilience, identity, and social justice. From advocacy to writing, from lawyering to motherhood, every facet of her life reflects a singular purpose: making a difference in the lives of others.

Today, as a volunteer leader at UCLA, Leslie continues to strengthen the bonds that unite our Bruin community, embodying the transformative power of purpose-driven leadership.
