making space to listen

“One idea from this issue’s conversation with UCLA Vice Provost Ralina Joseph has stayed with me: listening does not have to mean agreement.

Joseph describes radical listening as the practice of resisting the urge to immediately respond while listening to another person speak. Instead, we make a conscious effort to understand what the other person is actually saying. She asks us to consider what becomes possible when we approach differences, not as something to resolve, but as something a strong community can build the capacity to hold.”
