President’s Message

Karen Swanson ’77 is a retired high school and middle school history teacher who was in the classroom for thirty-seven years and is currently the President of the re-emerging Inland Empire Network. When you meet Karen, you learn what it is to be a True Bruin. “I am so proud of what UCLA stands for as a University. When I walk onto the UCLA Campus, I am overwhelmed with pride and love. I love being a Bruin and having so many opportunities to give back. I have met so many wonderful and generous people.” Karen and her husband, Rick, both come from very strong Bruin families and have two sons, one of whom is also a Bruin.

Karen has been a part of the UCLA Alumni Scholarships program for twelve years. “It all began by reading UCLA Connect and seeing a need for scholarship readers. I thought ‘I can do that.’” Karen is currently the UCLA Alumni Scholarship Steering Committee Volunteer Engagement Chair. “I love reading the applications but the best part is meeting and connecting with the students who have earned the prestigious alumni scholarships.”

Her hope is to find other Bruins who want to come together in the IE to create a strong network.
