Paula Amezola is creator and founder of First Gen Legacy (FGL) an equity education service committed to providing first-generation students with the tools for successful

careers and generational wealth. Having navigated the challenges of migration,financial struggles and language barriers, Amezola earned her bachelor’s in genetics from UC Davis and a Master of Public Health in epidemiology from UCLA.

With over two decades in public health, Amezola has focused on diversity, equity,inclusion, advocating empathy and cultural humility. As the former founder of public health career services at the Keck School of Medicine, she has extensive experience in program development and career coaching. Amezola was elected to the CCUSD School Board of Education in 2020 as the first Spanish-speaking Latina. She addresses equity issues for English learners, low-income and unhoused students. This role introduced her to a financial literacy teacher community, aligning with her vision of equipping students with crucial life skills.

The 2025 UCLA Award for Community Service honors Chief Ricardo Barboza ’95, UCLA Fire Marshal for the UCLA campus and UCLA Health, for his outstanding dedication to keeping the campus safe and his deep commitment to the True Bruin Values: excellence, integrity, accountability, respect and service.

For nearly two decades, Chief Barboza has been a steadfast protector of the UCLA community, working tirelessly to safeguard lives, property and the environment. As an advisor to UCLA’s Emergency Management Policy Group (EMPG) — the senior leadership team responsible for responding to campus-wide risks — he plays a critical role in shaping emergency preparedness and response strategies.

During recent wildfires, Barboza prioritized clear, transparent communication, ensuring that students, faculty and staff felt informed and protected. But his impact extends well beyond crisis response. He launched “Cold Brew & Conversation,” a program designed to connect with students and staff in a more personal way while providing essential fire safety education and highlighting campus resources.

As the first Latino to lead UCLA Fire, Barboza is a champion for inclusivity. He fosters a culture of respect, collaboration and proactive problem-solving, ensuring that every voice is valued. His leadership style is hands-on and team-focused — always leading by example, always making time to support and uplift his colleagues.

With a 30-year career spanning UCLA Fire, UCPD, and the Alhambra and Torrance fire departments (began UCPD in 1995), Barboza’s dedication to service runs deep. His generosity extends beyond his professional role — like in 2014, when he donated platelets at the UCLA Blood & Platelet Center to help save a young mother’s life. In fact, Chief Barboza has made over 150 donations for platelets.

Scout Bassett is the 2025 UCLA Young Alumnus of the Year, recognized for her advocacy and resilience. The Paralympian, author and activist transformed the adversity she faced into a powerful platform to champion others.

As an infant, Bassett lost her leg in a chemical fire and spent her early years in a Chinese orphanage. Adopted by a family in a small town in northern Michigan, her athletic journey began at age 14, when the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) provided crucial support to fund her training. She found solace and success by competing in races and mentoring young amputees.

Hoping to broaden her horizon after high school, she felt an immediate connection when she visited UCLA. She received a scholarship from CAF to continue her training at UCLA. Her college experience was enhanced by her work as an R.A., listening to other students share their life journeys.

After graduating from UCLA, she became a professional track and field athlete. Her athletic achievements are extraordinary: 2016 Paralympian; seven-time National Champion in the 100m; world record holder in the 400m; American record holder in the 100m and 200m; four-time ITU Paratriathlon World Championships medalist; four-time USA Paratriathlon National Championship medalist; and two-time World Championship bronze medalist.

Beyond her athletic success, Bassett is a powerful advocate for women and athletes with disabilities. She founded the Scout Bassett Fund to provide financial grants to young athletes with disabilities. She serves as president of the Women’s Sports Foundation, advocating for equal opportunities. For the upcoming LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games, she is an Athlete Commission Member, representing athletes’ interests. Her influence extends to corporate partnerships, including her role as a Gatorade Women’s Advisory Member and supporting initiatives for women in sports for PepsiCo.

Bassett’s story is chronicled in her autobiography, “Lucky Girl: Lessons on Overcoming Odds and Building a Limitless Future.” Her recognition as a USA TODAY Woman of the Year and a 2024 Elly Awards Honoree at the Women’s Forum of New York further underscores her significant impact as an inspiration to all.

Joseph Blancas serves as an assistant director for the Alumni Career Engagement team, which focuses on the development and implementation of large-and small-scale career programs for alumni and students. He currently oversees programs, such as the UCLA Alumni Mentor Program, the Career Coaches webinar series and other niche professional development programs and initiatives for alumni. Isaac Bryan, M.P.P. ’18 is the recipient of the 2025 UCLA Award for Public Service, recognizing his impactful leadership in improving the lives of Californians. Throughout his career, Bryan has built diverse coalitions to champion environmental justice, racial equity, housing justice and reform of the criminal legal system.

Bryan earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Arizona in political science and his master’s degree in public policy from the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs. While at Luskin, he was an advocate for policy reform rooted in research and scholarship. He served as the Director of Organizing for the Million Dollar Hoods research project, co-authoring a report on the cost of mass incarceration. He became the inaugural Director of Public Policy at the UCLA Ralph J. Bunche Center and the founding director of the UCLA Black Policy Project. Bryan received numerous fellowship awards and in 2021 was honored as the MPP Alumnus of the Year from UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs.

As a member of the California State Assembly, representing the 55th district, has successfully fought for policy changes and investments that protect marginalized Californians. He chairs the Committee on Natural Resources and the Assembly’s first Select Committee on Poverty and Economic Inclusion. He is also vice chair and a founding member of the Renters Caucus and also serves as vice chair of the California Legislative Black Caucus.

His legislative victories include phasing out oil drilling near homes and communities, eliminating fees for parents with children in foster care, ending prison gerrymandering, ensuring access to menstrual products for incarcerated Californians, and protecting foster youth survivor benefits. He secured vital funding for initiatives including the establishment of the Center on Reproductive Health, Law, and Policy at the UCLA School of Law and the first Climate Change Education Center in the California Community College system at West LA College. He also created a stipend program for formerly incarcerated community college students.

As one of the youngest California legislators and one of 12 Black state lawmakers, Isaac Bryan is using the knowledge and skills he honed at UCLA towards making impactful policy changes at the intersection of environmental, economic, education and housing justice.

Sonia Das is the principal attorney at the Law Offices of Sonia Das specializing in non-profit organizations and estate planning. She earned a bachelor’s degree in history (with honors) from UCLA in 1990. UCLA provided a wonderful education, cultural enrichment, and many leadership skills. She was awarded a Congressional Silver Medal in recognition of her academic work and community service including several hundred hours of volunteer work at the Long Beach VA Hospital. Sonia earned her Juris Doctor from Western State University School of Law. Quilters by the Sea (Long Beach) received The Good Neighbor Award from the City. She was also personally recognized for her efforts for the Community Baby Shower by the Long Beach City Council. The 2025 UCLA Award for Professional Achievement belongs to Joanna Doran ʼ98 for her dedication to improving the lives of those affected by cancer. The distinguished attorney, author and speaker is an advocate for patients finding a path forward, allowing them to focus on healing.

Doran’s commitment began while studying political science with an emphasis in international relations at UCLA. As a student, she worked at the John Wayne Cancer Institute (JWCI), where she saw the legal challenges patients faced. She earned her J.D. at Loyola Law School, where she externed for a disability rights organization with a program on cancer. Upon graduation, she received a public interest law fellowship to continue her work in cancer rights. Within a few years, she became director of that program and began teaching a course on Cancer Rights Law.

Driven by these early experiences, Doran co-founded and serves as CEO of the national nonprofit Triage Cancer, the only nationwide organization dedicated to providing free education on the legal and practical issues that may impact individuals diagnosed with cancer and their caregivers.

Recognizing the overwhelming burden placed on cancer patients by these challenges, Doran is sharing her expertise with others. She has presented more than one thousand educational seminars and educated countless students at Triage Cancer and as an adjunct professor of law at Loyola Law School Los Angeles, and Wayne State University Law School. She has contributed to numerous publications and co-authored “Cancer Rights Law” for the American Bar Association, the first and only book of its kind.

Her leadership and advocacy have been recognized with numerous accolades, including the 2009 Advocate of the Year from Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the 2015 Legacy Advocate Award from Stupid Cancer and she was named one of the Top 20 Attorneys in California Under the Age of 40 by the Los Angeles Daily Journal in 2010. She has served on prominent committees and boards including the California Division of the American Cancer Society, ZERO Prostate Cancer’s Medical Advisory Board and the executive committee of the American Bar Association’s Breast Cancer Task Force.

Cinthia Flores was appointed in 2020 by California Governor Gavin Newsom to serve as a Board Member of the California Agricultural Labor Relations Board. She served as a quasi-judicial officer, adjudicating claims arising from state labor law. Prior to her appointment, she practiced immigration law, with a focus on defending individuals from deportation at the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA). Cinthia is Past President of the Latina Lawyers Bar Association, an organization dedicated to supporting Latinas in the legal profession. Estellaleigh Franenberg joined UCLA Alumni Affairs in June 2000 as member services manager specializing in high-level customer service, campus and community relations, and volunteer recruitment. She credits those daily interactions with constituent audiences for invaluable insights into the rich diversity of experience and thought within UCLA. That, combined with a strong background in creative and journalistic writing, informed Franenberg’s work when in 2007 she became a Director of Marketing and Communications, managing the marketing for affinity, professional and regional networks, special projects and campus partnerships.

Promoted to Creative Director in 2014, her title changed to Senior Director of Alumni Marketing & Creative Engagement in 2019. After completing her Ph.D. in Urban Schooling, Dr. Pacheco directed a writing counseling program for UCLA undergraduates in the Community Programs Office and then transitioned to working in the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Office and the Dean of Student Office. In these roles she adjudicated student conduct cases, co-supervised the conduct team, facilitated professional development training for staff in relation to issues of equity and diversity, and developed signature events and initiatives to strengthen the university community and improve campus climate. As the Assistant Director of Alumni Travel, Suz Park Ramirez processes and coordinates travel for more than 50 different tours around the world, provides administrative and financial support, and is in the process of developing a young alumni travel program. Previously, she was the travel coordinator with Alumni Travel. In that role Park coordinated bookings and confirmation packets for nearly 1,000 travelers annually. She also managed the Via Tour travel database, evaluations, host and faculty expenditures, and pre-departure meeting logistics. Park has served as a tour director on in-house cultural programs and is familiar with a majority of the tour offerings. Biography:

Lucy Tseng is a Life & Resilience Coach working with folks who are experiencing major changes, particularly athletes of all levels who are transitioning to life after sports. Additionally, she is part of the development team that raised $5.49 billion during The UCLA Centennial Campaign and focuses on raising funds for scholarships and student support. Tseng was born and raised in Los Angeles and takes pride in being a native Angeleno. As a UCLA student, she was involved with several campus organizations including UCLA UniCamp, Pediatric AIDS Coalition, and served as a Resident Assistant for the Office of Residential Life. In 2014, Tseng graduated from the University of San Francisco (Southern CA campus) with a Master’s Degree in Sport Management. Her master’s thesis was focused on building a program to include life skills and development training for student-athletes. Shortly after grad school, she was recruited to work for Environmental Charter Schools (ECS), where she learned a great deal about the world of business development. After two years of being hands-on with almost every project at this growing charter school network, Tseng returned to her alma mater to contribute through the development team. To this day, she is a very active alumna and staff member. In July 2020, she was appointed as a staff advisor to the UC Board of Regents by President Janet Napolitano. Tseng’s breadth of experience has helped her discover her passion: being a resource to all people. More specifically, her purpose in life is to inspire and support others in finding, pursuing and living their own passions and purpose.

Rhea Turteltaub is the UCLA Vice Chancellor, External Affairs. Appointed in March 2008, she oversees one of the nation’s leading advancement organizations, a diverse and integrated department of over 600 staff comprised of Development, Alumni Affairs, Government & Community Relations, Advancement Services, the UCLA Alumni Association, and the UCLA Foundation. Rhea led The Centennial Campaign for UCLA – which surpassed its $4.2 billion goal 18 months ahead of schedule. The campaign launched publicly in May, 2014 and concluded in December, 2019, right in the midst of UCLA’s 100th anniversary commemoration. During the initiative, nearly 220,000 donors from all 50 states and 98 additional countries contributed more than 574,000 gifts, advancing causes across campus, in communities throughout Southern California, across the nation and around the world. The Centennial Campaign raised a total of $5.49 billion for UCLA, helping to shepherd another century of groundbreaking achievements in teaching, research, and service. Prior to her arrival at UCLA in 1994, Rhea held leadership roles at Otis College of Art and Design and The University of Chicago, as well as campaign positions at the University of California, Berkeley, and her alma mater, Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, where she currently serves on the Board of Trustees.

Joseph Vardner is Director of Integrity Risk Management at Meta Platforms, Inc, where he supports a team focused on product compliance. He is also co-chair of Meta’s Pride@North America resource group. Joe has volunteered with several non-profit organizations, including serving as president of the DC LGBT Bar Association, and on the boards of the UCLA Alumni Chapter in DC and DOJ Pride. He is a current board member of the National LGBT Bar Association. Joe graduated from UCLA with a degree in civil engineering and received his law degree from Harvard Law School. After law school, he worked at the US DOJ Antitrust Division where he received the Attorney General’s Award for Distinguished Service for his work enforcing competition laws in the credit card industry.

Loren Vevaina supports various alumni networks such as Arizona, Colorado, Downtown Los Angeles, Monterey, San Fernando Valley, San Francisco, Silicon Beach, Texas and Westside Los Angeles, as well as other emerging networks. In her role, she works with alumni leaders around the nation to connect and engage Bruins through a variety of community service, social and networking events.

Prior to joining Alumni Affairs, Loren worked at the UCLA School of Law. She served as president of the UCLA Westside Alumni Network and as a regional partnerships committee member of the UCLA Young Alumni Development Council.

Loren graduated with a bachelor of arts in sociology and a minor in education.

Celia Ward-Wallace ’98 is the 2025 Edward A. Dickson Alumnus of the Year. A social justice leader, visionary changemaker and entrepreneur, her work through South L.A. Café and its Community Foundation has had a transformative impact in South Los Angeles and beyond.

The daughter of civil rights organizers Lian Hurst Mann and Eric Mann, Ward-Wallace was raised with a deep responsibility to fight injustice and stand with marginalized communities. She spent 13 years with the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks as a community center director, where she helped launch Girls Play LA, expanding Title IX protections and access to sports for girls citywide. While working full-time, she earned her juris doctorate from the People’s College of Law, a movement-based institution training lawyers for justice.

In 2011, she founded The Ward-Wallace Group, a coaching and consulting firm that has supported over 1,000 leaders, organizations and social enterprises. Her signature programs — Soulful Coaching Academy, Super Fly Soulful Business and Women’s Night Out — train women and movement leaders to create impact from a place of purpose and power.

Ward-Wallace is a keynote speaker, author, correspondent and television host. Her book “A Woman’s Guide to Having It All,” is a blueprint for leading with authenticity and building a just world. She also serves as an adjunct faculty member, teaching graduate students and community leaders a curriculum rooted in justice, resilience and legacy.

In 2019, she and her life partner Joe Ward-Wallace co-founded South LA Cafe. With multiple locations including ones at the Natural History Museum and Hollywood Bowl — the café offers fresh, healthy and affordable food while serving as a civic and cultural hub. The anti-gentrification effort turned community anchor is built on the Community Centered Business Model™, which reimagines businesses as a force for justice. They hire locally — including system-impacted individuals — offer above-living wages, and partner with the South LA Community Foundation to run the Café Academy, a workforce training program that builds leadership and career pathways.

Building on the success of the café, the Ward-Wallaces founded the South LA Community Foundation in support of advancing racial equity, economic justice and climate resilience. In 2020, the Foundation launched the South LA Grocery Giveaway, which provides free groceries to over 200 families every Wednesday and has served roughly 300,000 people to date. The Foundation also mobilized free Covid testing, vaccinations and health clinics during the pandemic. In 2024, the Foundation secured funding from Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove to develop South LA Community Resilience Centers — expanding the cafés into hubs for empowerment, emergency response and self-determination.

In response to the 2025 L.A. wildfires, the Foundation organized and mobilized over 1,000 volunteers, distributed air purifiers and core necessities to over 500 families and supported 400 incarcerated firefighters on the front lines. Their work was backed by major funders including the City of Los Angeles, United Way, Annenberg Foundation and The California Endowment.

A proud Bruin, activist, mother and freedom dreamer, Celia Ward-Wallace exemplifies what it means to live a life of legacy and purpose. Ron Yee has dedicated his career to strengthening organizations and communities through servant leadership, innovation, and mentorship. As an Information Technology leader at Pacific Life, he led more than 200 software professionals, fostering a culture of teamwork and innovation that earned the company’s highest Innovation Challenge award. Beyond the workplace, he has devoted decades of volunteer leadership to UCLA, serving on the Alumni Association Board, the Chancellor’s Society, the Order of the Golden Bruin, Parents’ Council, and numerous alumni initiatives that expand engagement and philanthropy. His commitment to community extends through leadership roles with the John R. Wooden Award Foundation, where he co-founded its educational program, and the Mission Viejo Community of Character Committee, helping promote character development and civic values. His sustained contributions have been recognized with UCLA’s Volunteer of the Year honor in 2025 and a U.S. House of Representatives Certificate of Congressional Recognition for dedicated community service.

Ron Yee ’84 is the recipient of the 2025 UCLA Award for Volunteer of the Year, representing the true spirit of Bruin generosity. His deep love for UCLA isn’t just reflected in his ever-present Bruin gear or his personalized UCLA license plate — it shines through in the countless hours he has devoted to uplifting the UCLA alumni and parent communities.

As the son of immigrants, Yee has never forgotten the support that helped him attend UCLA, and he has spent more than 15 years paying that kindness forward. A dedicated leader of the Orange County Alumni Network, he has created pathways for students, parents and alumni to connect and succeed. From hosting the Orange County New Bruin Send-offs for over a decade to representing UCLA at Future Bruin college fairs, Yee has helped bring generations of Bruins into the fold. Whether he’s organizing watch parties, leading game-day meetups, or mentoring students and young alumni, he is a tireless champion of Bruin spirit and community.

For Yee, UCLA is also family — literally. He met his wife, Peggy Yee ’84 in the Rieber dining hall, and together, they have raised three Bruin alumni. His deep involvement with the UCLA Parents’ Council began when their eldest son enrolled, and for more than a decade, he has continued to welcome and support Bruin families, serving as historian, co-chair and now as an engaged member of the Parents’ Council Emeriti group.

Beyond UCLA, Yee’s commitment to service knows no bounds. Whether mentoring students, championing SPARK campaigns, or supporting the Wooden Athletic Fund and the Samueli School of Engineering, he is always looking for ways to give back. His impact extends into his professional life as well — rising to director of IT Innovations at Pacific Life and earning recognition for his forward-thinking leadership. Even in his community, he continues to make a difference, co-founding the Mission Viejo Diversity and Inclusion Task Force and receiving honors for his dedication to youth mentorship.

Yee often cites one of his favorite John Wooden quotes: “You can’t live a perfect day until you do something for someone who will never be able to repay you.” By that measure, he has had more perfect days than we can count. UCLA is better because of him, and we are endlessly grateful for the warmth, enthusiasm and dedication he brings to the Bruin family. Thanks to Ron Yee, UCLA is a stronger, more connected and more spirited community.

Dr. Diana Zschaschel started her practice in 1999, incorporating her skills in behavioral therapy and hospital dentistry into her private practice. After dental school, she took a position with Children’s Miracle Network, a non-profit organization, providing dental care for the children of migrant workers in Northern California. Diana started Angels’ Smiles with the vision to bring optimum dental and overall quality healthcare to persons with disabilities. She has served on the medical board of directors for the PACE/Headstart program of Los Angeles. In 2001, Diana joined the Army Reserves to assist soldiers and travel for humanitarian missions around the world. In 2004, she was deployed to treat soldiers going to and returning from Iraq. She served as Battalion Commander for the 7452nd Medical Backfill Battalion in San Diego, where she was responsible for five medical, dental and veterinary companies comprising nearly 600 soldiers. She was Dental Consultant to ARMEDCOM division and currently is a Colonel and commander for the 185th Dental Company Area Support in Orange County, where she is responsible for 150 dentists and dental auxiliaries. For many years, Diana served as an Ambassador for the LA area Chamber of Commerce, which named her Volunteer of the Year. In 2007, she received Local Hero of the Year from Union Bank and was featured on KCET’s Hispanic Heritage Month. Diana received the Distinguished Alumna of the Year for Service by Chaminade College Preparatory.At UCLA and St. Vincent’s hospital she worked with medical anesthesiologists to treat severely disabled individuals, enabling them to receive quality dental care. While attending UCLA, she became a behavioral specialist for autistic children and continued to work as a therapist for several years while completing dental school. Following opportunities provided by the UCLA School of Dentistry to work with persons with disabilities, with the help of professors and classmates, Diana started a grassroots campaign with the statewide Special Olympics to provide oral screenings for the athletes. Among other awards, Diana received the Biotene Award for Excellence after completing oral exams of over 300 persons with developmental disabilities for a UCLA Public Health study. Diana is currently involved with the Prytanean Alumnae Association and has been a lecturer at the UCLA School of Dentistry general practice Residency program.
