Alan Lefor, M.D., M.P.H. '99, Ph.D., Dr.Eng., FACSAlan Terence Kawarai Lefor, M.D., M.P.H. '99, Ph.D., Dr.Eng., FACS, of Tochigi, Japan, passed away on July 21, 2023, after a long illness. He was 66.

Born Sept. 19, 1956, to Rita and Frank Lefor in the borough of Queens, New York, New York, he was raised in Rochester, New York, which he considered his hometown. After graduating from Brighton High School in 1973, Lefor went on to earn a B.S. degree at SUNY Albany, M.A. at Wesleyan University, M.D. at SUNY Upstate Medical University, master of public health at UCLA, Ph.D. in theoretical astrophysics at Tohoku University, and Dr.Eng. at the University of Tokyo.

An academic general surgeon specializing in surgical oncology, Lefor was a prolific writer, authoring several hundred academic articles in peer-reviewed journals and several academic book chapters. His hobbies included traveling, ham radio, genealogy and computer programming.

Lefor is survived by his wife, Chieko; son, Maarten (Jackie); brother, John (Wendy Bensussen); sister Eve Rutzen (Doug); Aunt Helen; and nephews and nieces: Ben (Ashley), Meghan Lefor (Doupere Tambou), Lauren Rutzen, and Nina Rutzen. He was predeceased by his parents and his Uncle Arnold.
