Bob Moore '53
Bob Moore '53, the oldest living former Bruin football player, celebrated his 95th birthday Oct. 11. Moore, a fullback on the team in the early 1950s and a former high school football coach, was honored by the UCLA Athletics during the recent UCLA-Utah football game and received a birthday message from Martin Jarmond, Alice and Nahum Family Director of Athletics:
Coach Moore,
As you are surrounded by friends and family on your birthday, I wanted to share a short note wishing you a very happy 95th birthday on behalf of your entire Bruin Family. I was fortunate enough to learn of your story, and while we are all disappointed that you are unable to join us at the Rose Bowl for our huge matchup against Utah, we know you are cheering from afar!
Thank you for your contributions to UCLA Athletics - the foundation that you and your fellow teammates laid has directly impacted today's successes, and for that, we are forever grateful. The impact you made upon your community following your time at UCLA through your work as a coach and Athletic Director at Willows High School is inspiring and exemplifies the spirit of a True Bruin.
Happy birthday, Coach Moore, and Go Bruins!
Martin Jarmond
Glen Lewis '80, who was coached by Moore at Willows High School in the 1970s, was involved in organizing the tribute. In a letter, he expressed his admiration for Moore and his appreciation to Athletics for recognizing Moore's birthday. Reminiscing about his former coach, he wrote:
Coach Moore, as I've known him since my 1972-76 Willows High School years prior to UCLA, embodies the "True Bruin," bringing not only his football skills and experience as a star UCLA football player to Willows but, more importantly, his character: always positive, always supportive of players and everyone he encounters to help them. He resides in Chico, California, which is 45 minutes from Willows. Even after a long day for him last Saturday, and a great flag on the mountain for the UCLA win over Utah, he was back in Willows at 9:15 a.m. teaching Sunday School.

I hope we can all have the stamina and strength of coach Moore when at 95! He's kind, compassionate and tough as nails, which he honed during his football era. He is also a minister and started a Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter at Willows during his tenure. He is both a coach and minister. He was at the hospital out of the blue minutes after my grandmother's passing in 1996 and comforted me for two hours.
A very happy birthday to Bob Moore from the UCLA Alumni Association!
