Carmela Marie Ruby, M.L.I.S. ’65, passed away August 14 in Sacramento at age 83. Her design and launch of the California Literacy Campaign was instrumental in making libraries a focal point in helping adults to read. An advocate for improved services for the disabled and institutionalized, Ruby was a volunteer for various peace, social justice, and welfare issues.
Ruby received her bachelor’s degree in literature from UC Berkeley in 1957 and her master of library science from UCLA in 1965. She is survived by her daughter, Maria; son, Aaron; grandchildren Ona and Aziz; sister, Andrea; and nephews Jon and Pete.
