Gloria (Nickerson) Griffin '61

Gloria (Nickerson) Griffin '61, a nearly 50-year member of Gold Shield Alumnae, passed away April 3 at the age of 90. She will be remembered for her warm smile and generosity, having loved and supported UCLA for many decades and in many capacities. In 1984, she and her late husband, Paul Griffin '53, received the Alumni Association award for University Service.

Gloria Nickerson was born in Buffalo, New York, on Dec. 16, 1932, to Lester James Nickerson and Jacqueline Hill Nickerson. The family moved California when she was 7.

When she was 18, she married Paul Griffin '53, who predeceased her in 2021 after 70 years of marriage. The Griffins had eight children, 22 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

An education major, Griffin was an elementary school teacher, an interior designer, and senior vice president and member of the board of directors of the family real estate firm, Griffin Homes. She served on the UCLA Alumni Association Board of Directors, hospital board of advisors, board of advisors for the College of Letters and Science, Dean's Council for the College of Humanities, and the Athletic Hall of Fame Committee.
