Jim Stavis '77Triple organ transplant survivor and succussful businessman Jim Stavis '77 has written his first book, "When Hope is Your Only Option," in which he shares a collection of personal stories and describes how hope and perseverance helped get him through many low points and near-death experiences.

Stavis was diagnosed with juvenile type 1 diabetes at age 17 and told that he faced a shortened lifespan filled with medical difficulties. He chose to tackle his medical issues using hope and positivity and went on to become a husband, father, grandfather and the owner of a successful Southern California steel distribution company, Paragon Steel. Along the way, Stavis nearly lost his battle several times before receiving the rare triple organ (heart, kidney and pancreas) transplant that saved his life.

Through a series of very personal stories, Stavis shares how he not only survived, but flourished. “My journey leading up to a triple organ transplant is a unique one,” says Stavis, who previously produced the award-winning documentary, "Source of Hope," about his transplant and the heroic donor family. “Most people will never be confronted by such a set of circumstances. However, you have probably experienced your own unique adversities over the years.”

Stavis is an ambassador for Donate Life and OneLegacy to help promote organ donation. Part of the proceeds from his book will support these organizations.
