Joseph B. Ishikawa ’42 passed away on April 14, 2017. While at UCLA, Ishikawa was on the wrestling and track teams. During his senior year he had an undefeated wrestling season in his weight class but was prevented from going to regionals because of a travel restriction for Japanese-Americans after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He was incarcerated at the Santa Anita Assembly Center and then transferred to the Granada War Relocation Center in Colorado. He received his UCLA diploma while in Santa Anita. His UCLA wrestling coach, Ray Richards, was instrumental in connecting Ishikawa with the University of Nebraska where he attended graduate school, securing an early release form internment.
