Larissa Lam '97
Larissa Lam ’97, director and producer of the award-winning documentary "Far East Deep South," has expanded the film’s distribution. Now available globally on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV, the film explores immigration, identity and race through the lens of her husband's family’s emotional journey to the Mississippi Delta.
The documentary uncovers the overlooked history of Chinese families who lived in the segregated South during the Jim Crow era, shedding light on the legacy of the Chinese Exclusion Act and the interconnected relationships between Black and Asian communities. Originally aired on the Emmy®-nominated "America ReFramed" series, the film has received critical acclaim — including a 2022 Telly Award — and is widely used as an educational resource across the U.S. It is also available to stream on Kanopy, Tubi, Comcast Xfinity and PBS Passport.
Lam is currently in production on her next documentary, "Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wing?," which explores the life of Chinese American actress and former Mississippi beauty queen Virginia Wing. She also recently signed a book deal with LSU Press to write a companion book expanding on the history and insights uncovered during the making of "Far East Deep South."
