Lois Smith-Bupp '45, M.A. '52
Lois Bupp '45, M.A. '52, passed away in May at the age of 102. Bupp, who earned her degrees in political science, was a longtime member of Gold Shield Alumnae of UCLA, an honorary organization of acknowledged leaders seeking to make impactful contributions to the University.
Gold Shield board member Jo Knopoff '53 shared this remembrance of her friend and colleague:
Lois was an exceedingly able administrator of a number of Extension programs, bright, smiling, with a lovely outgoing personality. Leon and I visited her in Cambridge, England, one summer when she was director of a UC summer program at one of the colleges at the university. After she married, she and her husband moved to Palm Springs, and she often let me know how sorry she was to have to miss an Arts Adventure I’d planned. After her husband died, she moved to a retirement home in San Francisco.
I kept in touch with one of her two nephews to ask him yearly to give her my birthday greetings and to learn how she was doing. (Lois had no children but was close to the two sons of her sister, and they looked out for her.) Eventually he reported that she was having difficulty even remembering who he was. And finally, not so long ago, that nephew’s wife let me know that her husband had died.
Lois lived a life of accomplishment, one might even say of adventure, and lived to a good old age.
