Marina McIntire, Ph.D. '80, who earned her doctorate in linguistics, studied internationally and taught at universities throughout the U.S., passed away on Oct. 2.

Born Marina Lucile LaRay in Los Angeles on July 20, 1942, she attended the University of California, Riverside, where she met her future husband, Elliot McIntire, receiving her B.A. in comparative literature (French and English) in 1963. She earned an M.A. in linguistics from California State University, Northridge, and became a sign language interpreter, working at conferences in Italy, Germany, Denmark and Finland.

McIntire taught at Pasadena City College, Gallaudet University, Durham University, Northeastern University and California State University, Northridge. In 1987-88 she had a Fulbright Fellowship to work at Stockholm University in Sweden.

She is survived by Elliot, her husband of 62 years; two sons, Andrew of Bowie, Maryland, Andrew's wife, Ann, and their three children, Gordon, Kathryn and Duncan; and David, of Portland, Oregon.

A celebration of life will be held Nov. 15 at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Willamette Falls in Oregon City, Oregon.
