Melva L. Cooke, M.A. '64Melva L. Cooke, M.A. '64, was recognized at the Riverside County Board of Supervisors meeting as the District 1 Woman of the Year for 2025, honored with other outstanding women from each district who have made a profound impact on their communities.

Supervisor Jose Medina noted, "Melva’s dedication to education and community service has left a lasting impact on countless students and families throughout Riverside County. From her early years in Kingsport, Tennessee, to earning degrees from Fisk University, UCLA [earning a master's degree in education] and studying at Oxford University, she has been a lifelong champion of learning.

"Her teaching career spans decades, including work with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Sherman Indian School and Rubidoux High School, as well as supporting at-risk youth at Juvenile Hall through the Riverside County Office of Education."

"Beyond the classroom, Melva has been a pillar of civic engagement, co-founding organizations like the Elites Social & Charity Club and serving on various community foundation boards, including the Janet Gorske Foundation. Her tireless advocacy has helped shape the future of education and service in Riverside.

"A devoted mother and grandmother, Melva’s legacy of excellence, mentorship and compassion continues through the generations she has inspired. Her contributions to our community have been nothing short of transformative, and we are honored to celebrate her achievements."
