Roy Whiteker '50, M.S. '52, Ph.D.
Roy '50, M.S. '52, Ph.D., and Jean Whiteker (courtesy of Scott Whiteker)Roy Whiteker '50, M.S. '52, whose nearly four-decade tenure at the University of the Pacific included serving as dean of the College as well as professor of chemistry, passed away Feb. 14 at the age of 96.
Whiteker served as dean from 1976, when he joined the university, to 1989. He then moved into the classroom and taught until his retirement in 2014.
Described by colleagues as "candid and straight-forward," "a very good mentor" and "a great person," Whiteker was an avid supporter of Pacific athletics as well as music, drama and other arts programs.
After receiving his undergraduate and graduate degrees in chemistry from UCLA, Whiteker went on to earn his doctorate in chemistry from Caltech.
He is survived by wife of 63 years, Jean, son Scott and grandchildren Samantha, 16, and Joshua, 13.
