Stacy Dukes, M.A. '69Designer Stacy Dukes, M.A. ’69, passed away in Santa Ana on Sept. 19 at age 85.

Dukes was perhaps best known for his colorful Efebo and Efebino molded plastic chairs, designed for the Los Angeles Public Library in 1965 and manufactured by Artemide in Italy.

During the years he was associate professor at Cal State Long Beach, Dukes taught graphic, furniture, exhibit and environmental design, all the while working as an independent design consultant in California and abroad. In 1983, he started Stacy Dukes Design in Santa Ana, undertaking a range of graphic and structural projects in a wide variety of materials and processes.

Dukes took great joy in mentoring young designers, saying in an interview with Cal State Long Beach, “It’s the little victories that you have with a student where they accomplish things they never thought they were capable of, that has made the biggest impact on my career.”
