Vice Chancellor Osako will discuss the challenges and rewards of building a nimble and effective communications strategy for a remote university community during a pandemic and a year of social unrest. Osako chairs the UCLA Campus Honorary Naming Committee, tasked with reviewing the honorific naming and un-naming of campus buildings and major physical spaces. This is an opportunity to learn more, engage in the conversation around the process and have your voice heard.
Tune in for a highly informative discussion as Vice Chancellor Osako provides broader insight into the timing, need and principles that guide naming and un-naming decisions. The conversation may cover questions such as:
- How should the campus take in proposals for new honorific names for buildings and spaces?
Should groups as well as individuals be considered for honorific namings?
- How should we consider naming buildings and spaces after those who are well-respected in the dominant discourse but may be problematic in less well-known ways or within certain communities?
- Should UCLA un-name buildings and other major physical spaces that have honorific names? In what circumstances?
- In considering un-naming a building due to a namesake’s actions being out of step with the mission of the University, how should we determine whether to un-name?
