This presentation will revolve around the creative impetus that have pushed a small group of filmmakers and creative practitioners in the Bikol region of the Philippines to articulate the nuances of our afflictions and attractions towards a colonial history that remains violent, visceral, and vicious as gleaned in the cinematic narratives of Angustia (Out of the Depths, 2013, CinemaOne Originals) and Hinulid (The Sorrows of Sita, 2016).

The talk is designed like a poetic performance, an essay in progress, an etcetera, an elaboration of the Barthesian’s punctum, a paghurop-hurop, or a deep kind of reflection that invites us to return like the tandayag to our sea of sorrows and cast our nets into the altum, in saecula saeculorum.
