SUMMARY:Leading with Care: Creating Safe & Supportive Alumni Communities
DESCRIPTION:UCLA alumni volunteers create the moments that foster connection\, transforming a group of Bruins\, parents\, families and friends into a community. Usually\, this work is joyful and straightforward. \n\n\n\nBut sometimes it isn’t.\n\n\n\n\nA guest may behave in a way that concerns you.\n\n\n\nYou may notice someone who appears uncomfortable.\n\n\n\nSomeone may share an experience with you and look to you for help.\n\n\n\n\nIn the moment\, it may not be clear what you should do or say\, or when UCLA needs to be involved. \n\n\n\nOverview\n\n\n\nThis session helps you lead with care and confidence when something feels off. \n\n\n\n·       Set the toneHelp create welcoming events by setting clear expectations and respectful boundaries. \n\n\n\n·       Respond in the momentRecognize concerns and consider practical\, supportive next steps. \n\n\n\n·       Know when to involve UCLAUnderstand when to reach out\, whom to contact and what information helps. \n\n\n\n·       Know your roleUnderstand where your responsibility ends and UCLA’s support begins. \n\n\n\nWho should attend?\n\n\n\nThis training is intended for network leaders\, parent volunteers and others who help organize\, host or support UCLA alumni activities. Whether you lead a network\, plan events\, welcome participants or help bring programs to life\, the guidance is designed to be useful in the situations you may encounter while volunteering with UCLA. \n\n\n\nVirtual \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat we’ll cover\n\n\n\nCreating welcoming and respectful spaces\n\n\n\nAlumni volunteers already play a key role in setting a positive tone. We’ll explore ways to clarify behavioral expectations\, set clear boundaries\, and foster a welcoming environment where everyone feels included and valued. \n\n\n\nRecognizing and responding in the moment\n\n\n\nUCLA CARE will teach you how to identify concerning behavior and engage calmly to support the person. We will emphasize practical techniques\, including immediate actions and effective communication for de-escalation. \n\n\n\nUnderstanding when UCLA needs to be informed\n\n\n\nThe Civil Rights Office will specify when to escalate issues\, how to report concerns to UCLA and what details are most useful. We’ll also provide clear next steps to make contacting UCLA simple. \n\n\n\nKnowing where your role ends\n\n\n\nAlumni Affairs and the Civil Rights Office will outline the immediate next steps following a concern\, including when to contact your Alumni Affairs staff advisor\, what support you can expect from UCLA and when responsibility shifts out of the volunteer leader’s hands. \n\n\n\nThese partners will demonstrate that you have a support network\, emphasizing that you don’t have to face difficult situations alone. \n\n\n\nPractice with realistic scenarios\n\n\n\nKnowing the guidance is helpful. Applying it in the moment is another matter.A SESSION CONVERSATION MIGHT BEGIN WITH…“A guest is making another attendee visibly uncomfortable. What can I do right now?” \n\n\n\nWe’ll explore real-world alumni network scenarios\, discussing what volunteers might observe\, the available options\, when UCLA should intervene and how the response process might unfold. \n\n\n\nThere may not always be a single perfect solution or a clear course of action. The goal is to provide a framework that helps you respond thoughtfully and guides you on where to turn. \n\n\n\nExplore the available options in the moment\, including how to offer support and when it may be appropriate to involve UCLA. \n\n\n\nOur commitment to you\n\n\n\nWe support the people who support UCLA.\n\n\n\nYou give UCLA your valuable time\, judgment and willingness to help build community. This training is one way we can support you in return. We want you to leave not expecting difficult situations\, but feeling more confident that if one arises\, you’ll know what to do\, whom to call and that UCLA is there to help. \n\n\n\nWith gratitude to our partners\n\n\n\nWe are grateful to our colleagues at UCLA CARE and the Title IX Civil Rights Office for sharing their expertise\, guidance and care to support our alumni volunteers and the communities they serve. \n\n\n\nCARE: Campus Advocacy\, Resources & Education\n\n\n\nBuilding compassion\, knowledge and resilience encourages culture change toward a safer\, healthier\, equitable community. \n\n\n\nTitle IX Civil Rights Office\n\n\n\nStanding for a fair\, supportive and proactive approach in service of our community

SUMMARY:New York Tri-State Network: UCLA Alumni Recent Grad Mixer
DESCRIPTION:Whether you arrived after graduation or this has always been home\, life after UCLA can make even a familiar city feel new when you see it through a fresh perspective. But there are likely plenty of Bruins nearby — we just don’t recognize one another without our BearWear. Now is the time to change that. Join us for an evening of relaxed fun with the classes of 2020-26. \n\n\n\nThis is as low-key as it gets: no program\, no icebreakers and no expectation that you work the room. If you’d rather not walk in alone\, bring a friend — they don’t need to be a Bruin. Drop in for a bit or stay all evening. \n\n\n\nMaybe you’ll meet other sports fans to watch a UCLA game this fall\, find people who want to explore a new local spot in the next few months\, or exchange career tips down the line. Who knows — you might even end up sitting across from one another at a Dinner for 12 Strangers that one of you hosts next February. This could be the start of a circle of Bruins you keep bumping into — and choosing to spend time with. Our greatest hope is that you make friends you like enough to say\, “We should do this again\,” and then actually do it.

SUMMARY:New York Tri-State: UCLA / Cal Alumni Book Club: "Where the Dead Sit Talking\," by Brandon Hobson
DESCRIPTION:With his single mother in jail\, Sequoyah\, a fifteen-year-old Cherokee boy\, is placed in foster care. Literally and figuratively scarred by his mother’s years of substance abuse\, Sequoyah keeps mostly to himself\, living with his emotions pressed deep below the surface. At least until he meets seventeen-year-old Rosemary\, a troubled artist who also lives with the family. \n\n\n\nSequoyah and Rosemary bond over their shared Native American background and tumultuous paths through the foster care system\, but as Sequoyah’s feelings toward Rosemary deepen\, the precariousness of their lives and the scars of their pasts threaten to undo them both. SUMMARY:UC Trust - Netherlands: Climate Across Disciplines: What Can We Learn?
DESCRIPTION:The climate crisis is made up of a complex interconnected web of challenges that require deep collaboration and systems change. Yet\, when we look at the wide variety of sectors addressing various dimensions of climate solutions\, we do not see a lot of interdisciplinary engagement. To tackle climate change\, we need all hands on a shared deck with core principles of collaboration. \n\n\n\nHosted by the UC Trust\, join UC Netherlands Alumni to discuss what we can learn from diverse work on climate\, what takeaways from different sectors can be applied to the broader climate movement\, and how we can break down silos to increase collaboration on one of the most pressing issues of our time.

SUMMARY:Orange County Network: All Aboard! Fullerton Train Museum - Planes\, Trains & Automobiles
DESCRIPTION:Cabooses\, Lounge Cars & a 1951 Sleeper at the Fullerton Train Museum \n\n\n\nAll aboard\, Bruins! Join local UCLA alumni\, friends\, and families at the Fullerton Train Museum\, a collection of historic railcars on the house tracks beside the Fullerton train station. Volunteers keep every car in its “in service” condition. This is the Trains portion of our Planes\, Trains\, and Automobiles-themed fall events. Please check out our other OC Bruins Bruin Brew coffee socials and Museum events. \n\n\n\nStep inside three preserved cabooses\, one from each of the transcontinental railroads that served Southern California: a 1929 Santa Fe\, a 1942 Union Pacific\, and a 1961 Southern Pacific. Cabooses\, nicknamed “crummies\,” rode at the end of freight trains until 1989. Then relive the golden age of rail travel aboard two 1949 Union Pacific lounge cars in period décor and a fully restored 1951 Santa Fe streamlined sleeping car\, from the days before Amtrak and jumbo jets. \n\n\n\nMeet us at the museum at 10:00 AM\, and we’ll explore together until it closes at noon. \n\n\n\nPLEASE NOTE: \n\n\n\nFree Admission: The museum is free to visit. Please see their website for more information: https://fullertontrainmuseum.org/Meet at 10:00 AM: We’ll gather at the entrance and head in together. The museum closes at noon.Parking: Downtown Fullerton public parking is free during the day.Find Us: The railcars sit on the house tracks at the east end of the train station\, at Pomona and Santa Fe.By attending\, you acknowledge that photos may be taken and used in future OC Bruins or UCLA Alumni communications. The best part is the patio\, where Amtrak and cargo trains roll right past your table while you eat. SUMMARY:San Gabriel Valley Bruins: Autumn Morning Coffee Chats
DESCRIPTION:Join the SGV Bruins as we gather on a (hopefully) cool crisp Autumn morning for a cozy cup of coffee. Relax with fun convos with new and old friends. Make new connections and share your favorite stories and UCLA memories while the leaves are falling and coffee is calling. \n\n\n\nNOTE: We will be gathering outside and across the street from the coffee shop (Diamond Street side) to chat by the site of one of the original Carnegie libraries\, and invigorate our senses with the fresh Autumn air of the urban forest in South Pasadena\, a designated Tree City USA. There’s more history to where we’re meeting but you’ll have to come to find out more. There will be limited places to sit as this will be a casual coffee chat where we will mostly be standing and mingling in a park-like setting next to a building that is reminiscent of UCLA quad buildingarchitecture. \n\n\n\nRSVP by Nov 5th Noon.
