SUMMARY:New York Tri-State Network: Book Club December Meeting: "Skipping Christmas\," by John Grisham
DESCRIPTION:Our book group gets ready for the holidays by reading the book that inspired the movie “Christmas with the Kranks.” \n\n\n\nImagine a year without Christmas. No crowded shops\, no corny office parties\, no fruitcakes\, no unwanted presents. That’s just what Luther and Nora Krank have in mind when they decide that\, just this once\, they’ll skip the holiday altogether. Theirs will be the only house on the street without a rooftop Frosty the snowman; they won’t be hosting their annual Christmas Eve bash; they aren’t even going to have a tree. They won’t need one\,because come December 25 they’re setting sail on a Caribbean cruise. But\, as this weary couple is about to discover\, skipping Christmas brings enormous consequences – and isn’t half as easy as they’d imagined. \n\n\n\nA classic tale for modern times\, “Skipping Christmas” offers a hilarious look at the chaos and frenzy that has become part of our holiday tradition. (fromGoodReads) \n\n\n\nOur last meeting of 2026 will include a year-in-review to reflect on this year’s 12 selections. \n\n\n\nZoom

DESCRIPTION:You filled out the FAFSA yourself. You translated the financial aid letters at the kitchen table. You figured out office hours\, finals week\, and four years of Westwood with no one at home who’d done it before. \n\n\n\nThen you got the job\, and a whole new set of unwritten rules showed up. \n\n\n\nNobody told you the first offer was negotiable. Nobody explained that the real decisions sometimes happen at happy hour\, not in the meeting. Your family is proud of you\, even if they’re still not quite sure what you do all day. And you’re still the one they call when there’s a lease to read or a form to fill out. \n\n\n\nIf your parents or guardians didn’t complete a four-year degree in the U.S.\, you’re a first-gen Bruin. That doesn’t expire at graduation. \n\n\n\nCalling all first-generation UCLA alumni in Orange County for a morning of coffee\, candid advice\, and community with Bruins at every stage of theircareers. \n\n\n\nEarly in your career? Get straight talk from first-gen Bruins who’ve been in your shoes: negotiating offers\, asking for promotions\, building a network from scratch\, quieting imposter syndrome\, and balancing career goals with family expectations. \n\n\n\nFurther along? Be the person you needed back then. Share what you wish someone had told you\, connect with fellow seasoned first-gen alumni\, and help build an OC network that keeps showing up for each other. \n\n\n\nYou belonged at UCLA. You belong in every room you walk into now. No one handed you the playbook\, so come help write it. \n\n\n\nDate: Sunday\, December 6\, 2026Time: 9:00–11:30 AM (drop in anytime) Location: Café Cultura324 W. 4th St.\, Santa Ana\, CA 92701Parking: Nearby parking structures and street parking available.Cost: [Free / coffee on your own
