SUMMARY:OC Network: Watercolor by The Sea and the Science of Pigments
DESCRIPTION:Join other UCLA alumni\, friends\, and families for a $30 watercolor class fundraiser in beautiful Heisler Park in Laguna Beach. No experience is needed. High-quality supplies will be provided for use during the event. Each participant will take home their own plein-air watercolor painting on high-quality cotton watercolor paper\, and a color theory practice sheet. A bring-your-own picnic will follow after! \n\nThis is more than a paint-along class. Participants will get hands-on access to rare and historic pigments that are usually too expensive for casual use\, including Egyptian Blue\, medieval frit(smalt)\, genuine Lapis Lazuli\, Periwinkle phthalo blue\, Benzimidazolone Blue\, and genuine Quinacridone Gold PO49.\n\nWe’ll explore the science and history behind these colors: Egyptian blue as the first known synthetic pigment and a material still studied for near-infrared luminescence; smalt as a cobalt-glass pigment; lapis lazuli as one of art history’s most prized blues; and modern pigments that changed what artists can do with transparency\, staining\, glow\, and intensity. This will be a brief crash-course in pigment science and history\, including the science behind why AI can’t replace physical art!\n\nParticipants will also browse examples of watercolor styles—from realistic landscapes and botanical illustrations to modern abstraction\, travel sketching\, greeting-card art\, and fun crafts—before painting from the ocean\, cliffs\, gardens\, and architecture around us. \n\nCome paint by the coast\, meet fellow Bruins\, try rare pigments\, and learn why handmade art still has optical and material qualities that screens and AI can imitate\, but not physically replace. Your $30 registration includes supplies and supports future OC Bruins community events.\n\nPLEASE NOTE: \nNo Refunds: Unfortunately\, we don’t have the ability to offer refunds for this fundraiser or to help transfer your reservation. If you would like to give your reservation to someone else\, please email us their name so we can add them to the registration list. \n\nWhat’s included:\nYour $30 registration includes use of high-quality watercolor supplies during the workshop\, including shared access to rare\, historic\, discontinued\, and specialty pigments. Each participant will take home their finished plein-air watercolor painting\, and their color-theory practice sheet. \n\nPlease note that palettes\, brushes\, pigment samples\, books\, and demonstration materials are provided for shared class use only and will remain with the instructor so they can be used for future OC Bruin art events.

SUMMARY:Orange County Network: Laguna Beach Picnic
DESCRIPTION:Picnic by the Sea: A Coastal Bruin Gathering at Heisler Park\n\nJoin fellow UCLA alumni\, friends and families for a free community picnic in beautiful Heisler Park in Laguna Beach. Bring your own picnic lunch\, settle in on the lawn above the water\, and spend a relaxed afternoon catching up with the OC Bruins community over one of the best ocean views in Orange County.\n\nWe’ll gather at the main picnic area at the north end of the park\, on the lawn overlooking Picnic Beach\, near the intersection of Myrtle Street and Cliff Drive. This picnic follows our morning Watercolor by the Sea class\, so come for both or just drop in for the picnic — all Bruins are welcome either way.\n\nThe park has BBQ grills\, picnic tables\, plenty of trash cans and well-maintained restrooms. We’ll bring extra coolers with ice if you’d like to keep your food and drinks cold. There are also good coffee shops and takeout restaurants within walking distance if you’d rather pick something up nearby.\n\nBring your own picnic lunch\, water\, a blanket or beach chairs\, sunscreen and a hat. If you’d like to bring a little something to share you’re welcome to\, but it’s completely optional. This is a casual\, family-friendly gathering.\n\nPLEASE NOTE:\n\nCome Early for Parking: Heisler Park is very popular during the summer\, so both free neighborhood parking and paid lots fill up quickly\, especially in the late morning. Metered parking has a 3 to 4 hour time limit depending on the location\, with strict enforcement if you do not move your car after the limit. We strongly recommend arriving early to find free neighborhood parking or an all-day lot. The city runs free trolleys to Heisler Park\, but please be aware these may take longer than expected\, so plan accordingly.\n\nBy attending\, you acknowledge that photos may be taken and used in future OC Bruins or UCLA Alumni communications.\n\nThis is a free event. Come enjoy the coast\, meet fellow Bruins and make an afternoon of it by the sea!

SUMMARY:New York Tri-State Network: UCLA/Cal Alumni Book Club: "One Plus One\," by Jojo Moyes
DESCRIPTION:In August our book club has selected a book on the theme “Guilty Pleasures”: We will discuss “One Plus One\,” by Jojo Moyes. Suppose your life sucks. A lot. Your husband has done a vanishing act\, your teenage stepson is being bullied\, and your math whiz daughter has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that you can’t afford to pay for. That’s Jess’s life in a nutshell—until an unexpected knight in shining armor offers to rescue them. Only Jess’s knight turns out to be Geeky Ed\, the obnoxious tech millionaire whose vacation home she happens to clean. But Ed has big problems of his own\, and driving the dysfunctional family to the Math Olympiad feels like his first unselfish act in ages . . . maybe ever. (from GoodReads)
