For Mary Osako (Bruin story since ’96), UCLA was more than just a school; it was her dream. She became a first-generation college student determined to make the most of this opportunity. When her family faced a crisis during her junior year, UCLA’s supportive community stepped in to help her stay on track—an experience she credits with changing her life.

Now serving as UCLA’s first Vice Chancellor for Strategic Communications, Mary has come full circle. She cherishes the lifelong friendships she formed on campus and proudly identifies as a “Bruin for life.” Her journey highlights the power of authenticity. After initially struggling to fit into corporate culture, she found greater success by embracing her true self. This personal growth, along with the mentorship she received from our Bruin community, shaped her leadership and strengthened her commitment to giving back.
