The UCLA Internship Alumni Network (IAN) supports student career development through internships and mentoring. Our organization strives to make internships and experiential learning accessible to students, and to create a pathway for alumni to develop opportunities for students. We serve as an alumni resource in partnership with the UCLA Career Center and the UCLA Alumni Association.

The Alex White Scholarship Fund aids students in their internship endeavors, as well as provides for an expansion of UCLA Internship opportunities, both on an academic basis, as well as an experiential educational basis.

We are a network of alumni who advocate for the importance of internships in preparing students for their careers, and we are committed to supporting students to experience internships during their education at UCLA.
Our core objectives are:
1) Empower and encourage students to do internships, including offering financial support (through the Alex White Scholarship Fund). For more information click here.

president’s message
Greetings! I hope everyone’s year is wrapping up well and safely. My name is Jesse Flores, and I’m the new president of UCLA Internship Alumni Network. As part of the undergraduate class of ’17 (geography major) and graduate school class of ’19 (master’s degree in urban and regional planning), I’m grateful to have IAN over the past few years as an outlet through which I could give back to students.
I remember back in school, I found myself experiencing challenges navigating the landscape of internships; now, as a workforce development professional, I look back and am committed to ensuring students can overcome any barriers to securing a quality internship. Whether that be with monetary support for an unpaid internship through our Alex White Scholarship, networking for career exposure and job leads through our events or building connections across different UCLA departments to make career resources more seamless for our students, I and the rest of the IAN Board are excited to put on programming that can serve students, alumni, UCLA departments, employers and the rest of the UCLA community.

Interested in hiring a Bruin? Attract the best talent for your internships with these Top 5 Tips.
1. Read your Job Description with a student’s perspective. Are you sharing the learning outcomes? What new experience are you offering? What skills will they develop? Is your pay competitive? If you’re not offering pay, what will they gain from this experience? Does the internship sound interesting or worth their time?
2. Connect with an Internship Alumni Network Board member. If you have questions about the internship experience, talk with one of our board members to discuss. We are here to help you make your internship successful.
3. Utilize UCLA ONE to post your position. Post your position on this free UCLA resource for students and alumni. Once you post your position, share on the Feed that you are looking for a Bruin intern.
4. Prioritize learning over tasks. Your intern should feel that they’ve learned about your industry, company and role during their time with you. Give them work that is valuable to you, but also take the time to share their impact.
5. Feedback should be consistent. Giving and receiving feedback is key to a successful internship. Set aside time regularly to discuss highs and lows, and share constructive feedback.
