Mission

Alumni Scholar Club Vision Statement:

Upon receiving an Alumni Scholarship, students are automatically granted access to the Alumni Scholars Club (ASC) at UCLA. The Alumni Scholars Club is supported by and works in conjunction with the UCLA Alumni Association to give members support, community, leadership development and connection to Alumni.  Additionally, ASC provides members with various opportunities to engage in the required community service and participation for annual scholarship renewal.

It is our goal to unite and utilize the talents of Alumni Scholars in order to fully embrace the values of communityleadership, and service. To accomplish this, ASC has developed and adopted our own unique set of strategic goals:

PIECES.

  • Promote opportunities unique to Alumni Scholars. Experience the values and benefits of the Alumni Scholars Club by participating in activities throughout the year, including HomecomingDinner for 12 StrangersInterview with a Bruin, and Spring Sing.
  • Identify and promote service programs for Alumni Scholars. Join us for opportunities to serve UCLA and the greater Los Angeles community through programs such as Los Angeles Team Mentoring, Locks of Love, and many other service opportunities, which change on an annual basis or volunteer at one of the UCLA Alumni Associations various events. Remember, Alumni Scholars earn required service hours and participation credit while volunteering!
  • Encourage a strong social bond among Alumni Scholars. Meet students who share similar academic and social interests as you by participating in the many ASC mixers/socials and quarterly meetings.
  • Create productive relationships with Alumni. Interact with the Alumni who made your individual scholarship to UCLA possible at ASC-sponsored activities and see what your fellow Alumni Scholars have accomplished under the guidance of their own UCLA educators. Additionally, enroll in the Alumni Mentor Program with priority access in the early fall and get to know an alumnus who can provide you guidance and special opportunities for your educational and/or career paths.
  • Encourage leadership among Alumni Scholars. Become an Alumni Scholars Club coordinator and learn to manage student programs and an overall large organization. Likewise, hone your leadership skills through the Leadership Development Program and their numerous workshops throughout the year.
  • Support scholarships for the education of promising students. Help spread the word about Alumni Scholarships and the ULCA Alumni Association by visiting high schools or other college campuses and talking to prospective students through our Ambassador Program. Support the next-generation of Alumni Scholars by donating to the ASC Scholarship Fund.

Scholarships

Starting in 1936, the UCLA Alumni Association began the tradition of awarding scholarships to help deserving students. Since then, more than 10,000 Bruins have been the recipient of an Alumni Scholarship. To gain a better understanding of all the scholarships offered by the UCLA Alumni Association, information on each has been provided below. For additional information on each, please click here.

Alumni Scholarships for Incoming Students

All Alumni Scholarships for incoming students are initially awarded through a rigorous application screening process.

  • The Freshman Alumni Scholarship is a standard, merit-based scholarship open to all incoming students
  • The Dr. Ralph J. Bunche Alumni Scholarship is dedicated to continuing the legacy of Dr. Ralph J. Bunche '27, class valedictorian, United Nations founder and Nobel Peace Prize winner. These scholarships were established during the 1970s to recognize and support students from historically underrepresented backgrounds who add to the diversity of the UCLA community.  Students do not need to fill out a separate application to be considered for this award.
  • The Community College Transfer Alumni Scholarship is for students transferring to UCLA from a Community College. The scholarship award is divided into equal annual installments to be paid over two years and applicants are subject to specific transfer requirements.

Alumni Scholarships for Continuing Students

There are two scholarship opportunities available for continuing students.  The True Bruin Distinguished Senior Award is open to all UCLA seniors that have a minimum GPA of 3.75.  The Lew & Edie Wasserman Grant is open to continuing Alumni Scholars that have a financial need.

  • The True Bruin Distinguished Senior Award is a prestigious scholarship awarded to highly meritorious students who exemplify the True Bruin values of Integrity, Excellence, Accountability, Respect, and Service. It is an opportunity for seniors to receive a scholarship through the esteemed Alumni Scholarship Program, and highlight the skills, knowledge, and leadership experiences they have gained on campus and in their community. Award recipients will receive a $5,000 scholarship and be recognized and celebrated across campus. All eligible seniors are welcome to apply!
  • The Lew and Edie Wasserman Grant provides additional financial assistance to continuing students who have already won previous Alumni Scholarships. As these students have already established a strong record of merit based on their original awards, applicants are evaluated for Wasserman Grants using a combination of factors involving both merit and demonstrated financial need.

To renew your Alumni Scholarship you are expected to perform 15 hours of volunteer service and participate in 15 Alumni Scholars Club activities throughout the year. History

In 1976, the UCLA Alumni Association founded the Alumni Scholars Club (ASC) as a support group for students who had received Alumni Association scholarships. At its start, ASC focused solely on fostering relationships amongst its members by hosting social events such as: dances, parties, and bowling tournaments.

Entering the mid-1980s, ASC shifted its focus from a purely social club to one with a greater emphasis on service and community. Foremost, the organization initiated various student recruitment programs to give more scholars opportunities to alumni resources. Concurrently, ASC members became more involved in volunteering at Alumni Association events, marking the start of the service requirement for scholarship renewal.

Today, the Alumni Scholars Club coordinates a variety of student and alumni programs in conjunction with the Alumni Association. These programs vary from professional development to group bonding. ASC's executive board continues to develop and implement projects with support from the more than 500 active ASC members to show that student support goes far beyond the monetary contribution of the scholarship. Additionally, club meetings are held once every quarter and individual committees hold weekly meetings to help plan and add even more programs and service opportunities for other members.

ASC takes pride in serving UCLA and the Alumni Association, especially while working to create a sense of community among our Scholars.
