Joe Marvin '52
Joe Marvin '52, an English major and three-year letterman in varsity football (1949-51), passed away on Feb. 23 at the age of 93.
Marvin was football coach at Sequoia High School in Redwood City, California, from 1958 to 1963, where he led the team to 33 consecutive wins and four SPAL football titles from 1958-61. He went on to become backfield coach at Washington State (1964-65) and California (1966-70) and head coach at Cabrillo College in Aptos, California, winning five Coast Conference championships (1972-79), and a Northern California championship (1979).
A recipient of numerous awards for his coaching accomplishments, Marvin was inducted into the San Mateo County Sports Hall of Fame in 1992, the California Community College Football Coaches Association (CCCFCA) Hall of Fame in 1995, the Commission on Athletics Sport Hall of Fame in 1997 and the Sequoia High School Coaches Hall of Fame in 2004.
His daughter Diane Marvin Koenig wrote, "He was proud of being a Bruin and of his time at UCLA and as long as he and his wife Jean were able, attended the Alumni Association gatherings and contributed to the Wooden Athletic Fund.
"He will be missed by family and as well as many friends and players."
