Father Frank Sabatté '73
Father Frank Sabatté '73 has received the 2022 Gaudium Award from the Breukelein Institute "For illuminating the horizon of human experience," for his work as artist, curator and director of the Openings Collective.
Sabatté was born in San Jose, California, and received his B.A. in studio art from the School of the Arts and Architecture and his M.A. in sacred theology from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He was the former vice-president of the Liturgical Arts Guild of Ohio and has exhibited in San Diego, Santa Barbara, Columbus, Ohio, Grand Rapids and New York City. He has worked as an illustrator for the Paulist Press since 1977.
While at UCLA, Sabatté studied under James Vallerio, Lee Mullican, Elliot Elgart and Oliver Andrews. Ordained a priest in 1980, Sabatté is a member of the Paulist Fathers, a Roman Catholic order of priests. In addition to being the director of “Openings,” an artist collective in New York City, he is senior curator of The Gallery at the Sheen Center for Thought and Culture in New York City and artist-in-residence for the Paulist Fathers in New York City.
