Behind the Scenes – UCLA’s Surging Gymnastics Team
With two decades of coaching experience, Janelle McDonald was named the new head coach of the UCLA Gymnastics team in 2022 and within one season elevated the Bruins back into national prominence.
In her first season as a head coach, McDonald was named the 2023 Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) West Region Coach of the Year, and led UCLA to its first NCAA Championships appearance since 2019 and a final national ranking of fifth. The Bruins also won a Pac-12 regular season co-championship and finished the regular season ranked No. 4 nationally, 10 spots higher than they ranked the previous year.
Join the Town & Gown Affiliates and the Westwood Women's Bruin Club as McDonald discusses her team, assistant coaches and their quest for the National Championship. Each guest will receive two (2) tickets to the UCLA vs. Clemson meet, the last home competition of the season, on Saturday, March 16, at 2 p.m.
Cost includes a complete fajita buffet (vegetarian option available).
The Town & Gown Affiliates of UCLA has been supporting the University and surrounding Los Angeles community since 1937. “Town” represents the L.A. Community and “Gown” is for the robes denoting academia’s highest honors and degrees. The Affiliates proudly supports UCLA students by awarding more than $125,000 in scholarships. Recipients of these scholarships are a diverse group of undergraduate, transfer, graduate and professional students who represent UCLA’s values and embody the Bruin tradition of excellence.
Westwood Women's Bruin Club (WWBC) of UCLA is open to anyone who is a UCLA graduate, former student and/or friend of the University. WWBC does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual preference, handicap, age or marital status. The purpose of WWBC is to award scholarships through a scholarship program to freshman undergraduates and transfer junior students, and to create, foster, develop and encourage interest in the aims and achievements of UCLA and the entire L.A. community. WWBC has been actively supporting UCLA scholars since 1952 and in the early 1980s began awarding community college transfer scholarships to women returning to their education.
