Jeff Konopka '79
Jeffrey Donald Konopka '79, known to friends and loved ones as “Jeff,” passed away peacefully in San Jose, California, on Aug. 11, at the age of 72, after a valiant battle with cancer.
His family provided this remembrance:
Born on November 28, 1952, in Antwerp, Belgium, Jeff lived a life marked by intellect, deep devotion to his family and a zest for discovery.
A proud graduate of UCLA’s Class of 1979, Jeff earned his degree in electrical engineering and embarked on a distinguished career. He began at Pacesetter, where his brilliant mind yielded several patents, before finding his calling in aerospace at Lockheed Martin. There, he poured his talents into coding for the missile and space division — a source of enduring pride and frequent dinner-table stories.
Known for his quick wit and encyclopedic knowledge, Jeff excelled at crossword puzzles, built masterful Excel spreadsheets, and could recall every lyric by Bob Dylan, his unwavering favorite among a varied love of music that spanned the Beatles to opera. Those closest to him will never forget his joyful greeting each evening: “Yay, Vikki’s home!,” a testament to his boundless love for his beloved wife, Vikki, and his treasured daughters, Mandy, Nicole and Brandy.
Family was Jeff’s greatest passion. He delighted in time with his grandchildren, adventures in travel — especially to Arroyo Grande — and meticulously planning visits to Indian casinos across the country. Though a connoisseur of new foods, he notoriously avoided kimchi.
Jeff is survived by his wife Vikki; daughters Mandy, Nicole and Brandy; brother Jim; sister Kim; and many cherished grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, Donald and Donna.
A celebration of his life will be held Oct. 11 at 2:00pm, at the Upper Clubhouse, 765 Mesa View Drive, Arroyo Grande, CA 93420. Hawaiian shirts are encouraged — extras will be on hand. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in honor of Elizabeth Cappa.
As Bob Dylan wrote,
“It ain’t no use to sit and wonder why, babe… Don’t think twice, it’s all right.”
Jeff’s warmth, wisdom, and spirit live on in all who loved him.
