Thomas Tugend, M.A. '58

Tom-ResizedThomas “Tom” Tugend, M.A. '58 has been named as a Chevalier (Knight) in the National Order of the Legion of Honor based on his service in World War II and his regiment’s association with the First French Army. During the war, Tugend and his U.S. infantry regiment were attached to the First French Army in the Colmar Pocket fighting in the Alsace region of France as well as the subsequent breakthrough of Germany’s Siegfried Line.

Tugend later served as squad leader of an anti-tank unit, as a volunteer in Israel’s 1948-49 War of Independence and the Korean conflict in 1950. Tugend, who has worked for the San Francisco Chronicle, Los Angeles Times and the Madrid bureau of the Associated Press in Spain, continues as an active journalist at 91, primarily for Jewish publications.
