Albert Moore J.D. ’78

“More than any academic I have seen or worked with in stints at UCLA, Harvard and Stanford, Al Moore stands out as the one professor most passionately committed to effective teaching.” This comment from fellow professor Gary Blasi is a typical description of Albert Moore.

For the past 20 years, Moore has been one of the cornerstones of UCLA’s comprehensive and nationally recognized clinical program.

His student evaluation scores consistently and substantially surpass the faculty average. In some classes, he receives perfect scores – meaning every student in the course has given him the top grade.

Having been a practicing attorney, Moore is a professor who possesses the qualifications necessary to teach clinical courses, in which students represent actual clients under faculty supervision.

Even after his students have left his class, he will spend hours with them discussing their experience as an attorney and providing career advice. He’s attended students’ musical performances and swearing-in ceremonies. One attorney wrote, “I recently participated in a continuing legal education class. I called professor Moore seven years after I graduated to discuss the class.”

Students write about how the experience they gain in Moore’s classes give them a head start when beginning their careers. They save Moore’s course handouts, exercises, notes and assignments and refer to them long after they’ve graduated.

Moore also trains volunteer attorneys for the Legal Aid and the Labor Defense Network and conducts deposition training sessions for the Los Angeles U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Former student Carmel Myers J.D. ’02 writes, “His course was an experience like no other in the law school. I have taught at UCSD. I would wish I had served my students even half as well as professor Moore served us. We were in the presence of a master teacher and for that I will always be grateful.”
