“What excites me about research is that we are working on things that no one else in the world is; we have the ability to extend our boundaries of knowledge,” says Aswin Chandrasekaran, a truly remarkable member of the UCLA community. Aswin is devoted to studying the mapping of Expression Quantitative Trait Loci in the mammalian genome. His project focuses on a genome-wide approach that will allow researchers to select any gene of interest and identify regions in the genome that are responsible for its regulation. He also has interned for the neurogenomics division of the Translational Genomics Research Institute in Phoenix, Ariz.

Although science is his primary passion, Aswin has a wide range of interests and hobbies. One of his favorite on-campus activities is Project RISHI (Rural India Social & Health Improvement), of which he is president and founder. He has also been a student of South Indian classical (Carnatic) music for the past 15 years, and has performed in 10 to15 concerts in Phoenix, L.A., Cleveland, and South India. UCLA is lucky to have Aswin on campus for another year, before he goes on to a M.D./Ph.D. program.
