Augustus Hawkins ’31
Congressman Hawkins, who completed his 12th term as Representative for the 29th Congressional District of California in 1984, has shown that he cares deeply about the welfare of all citizens. He has labored in Congress to guarantee full employment in the U.S., provide improved educational and job opportunities for young people, improve the quality of schools and teachers, encourage inner city youth to improve their skills, and reduce crime.
After serving in the California State Assembly for 28 years, compiling an impressive legislative record which reflected his interest in a wide range of social issues, he was elected to Congress in 1962, where he continued to strengthen his reputation as a legislator who cared about the welfare of all people. Among landmark legislation with which he is identified are the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act, Civil Rights Act establishing the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA) and Humphrey-Hawkins Full Employment Act.
Rep. Hawkins best exemplifies his personal view of public service: “The leadership belongs not to the loudest, nor to those who beat the drums or blow the trumpets, but to those who toil, day in and day out, in any season, for the practical realization of a better world.” No one could be more dedicated than Gus Hawkins, who for 52 years has superbly served his nation, state and constituency.
