Beatrice Mandel ’61
On day in the mid-1970s, Bea Mandel paid $10 to attend a lecture at UCLA and was informed that she had joined Affiliate, a support organization of alumnae and friends. A year and half later, she was the group’s president.
From its almost accidental beginnings, Bea’s career as a volunteer at UCLA has burgeoned into something resembling a love affair. Through the Affiliates and Gold Shield, Bea became involved in the UCLA Council of Support Organizations. She became active in The Royce Two-Seventy and the Alumni Association Advisory and Scholarship Program. She is one of the few female volunteers on campus to serve on The UCLA Foundation Board of Trustees.
Bea’s myriad activities led to her appointment as first vice president of the Alumni Association, for the 1984-86 term. The following year, she broke new ground by becoming the first female president of the UCLA Alumni Association and by virtue of that position, served as a UC Regent. Bea’s was a presidency of distinction, building an association that was stronger, more prosperous and financially independent than ever before.
Especially dedicated to supporting the University’s academic goals, Bea has been a member of the Dean’s Council for the College of Letters and Science for more than yen years, and a member of the Friends of the Center for the Study of Women since 1988. For two years she has chaired the UCLA Graduate School of Education Development Program.
In 1984, in recognition of her many contributions to the community, Bea was awarded a UCLA Alumni Association Community Service Award. As a very special community in its own right, the UCLA Alumni Association is pleased to honor her efforts again with an award for University Service.
