Betty Yen ’92
Her music teachers are astonished when they learn that she’s an outstanding pre-med student. Her science teachers are amazed to discover that she’s a gifted pianist and musical scholar. Betty Yen has succeeded in juggling two of the most challenging undergraduate programs at UCLA, receiving practically straight A’s in both. And, in addition, Betty has managed to put in many hours of volunteer work, showing outstanding leadership capabilities.
In music, Betty Yen challenged herself beyond the curriculum required of a performance major by enrolling in multiple music history and literature courses. Both Betty’s junior and senior piano recitals were “exquisite,” her professors say, demonstrating mature taste and expressivity. At the same time Yen was preparing for these recitals, she was working with a professor at the UCLA School of Medicine to plan an ambitious program of study in neuron-anatomy. She has been accepted at all the top medical schools to which she has applied, and many believe that she could well make significant contributions in both medicine and music.
In 1990, Betty was awarded the Alumni Association’s Distinguished Scholar Award.
Yen has volunteered at the UCLA Hospital, and has given her time with the Asian Hypertension Project and the Venice Family Clinic. She served as piano accompanist for her church choir, and also worked as an academic counselor to help new students adjust to University life.
Poised, independent and endowed with boundless energy, Betty Yen personifies all the qualities of a truly Outstanding Senior.
