David Martin ’60, M.S. ’62, Ph.D. ’66

David Martin is a professor of engineering and applied science and vice chair of undergraduate studies. With a generous desire to develop independent thought and creative research, he instills in his students the highest intellectual and professional standards.

Receiving his bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and Ph.D. from UCLA, Martin is a triple alumnus of the Westwood campus. He served on the electrical engineering faculty at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before returning to UCLA as an assistant professor in the computer science department.

Admired for his consideration and accessibility, Martin’s willingness to discuss concepts beyond the boundaries of course material creates a relaxed climate of motivation and encouragement. Martin’s principal teaching and research interests are the development and application of theoretical techniques to the solutions of practical problems, specializing in the semantics and implementation of computer programming languages. He ahs twice received the Distinguished Teaching Award from the Engineering Graduate Students Association.
