Horacio N. Roque Ramirez ’92, M.A. ’94
A first-generation college student who has worked to supplement the many scholarships and awards he has received, Horacio Roque Ramirez has deliberately chosen jobs that support the UCLA community. At the same time, he has extended a helping hand through a variety of volunteer activities.
Working with representatives from the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund, he established a forum and seminar on the Bradford Ruling, which denies financial aid to undocumented students. He conducted research on first-generation college students and developed and administered a survey to study patterns of personality traits in Asians and Asian-Americans. He also initiated independent research on Salvadorian sociologist Alberto Masferrer, translating his work El Minimum Vital into English, and worked with Professor Carlos Torres on a bibliography translation of the works of Paul Freire.
On campus, Roque Ramirez co-founded the Latin American Student Association. He was a member of the Ad Hoc Honors Programs Review Committee and the Academic Advancement Program Policy Board and wrote articles for La Gente. He also served as a junior high and high school liaison for the Latin American Student Association and worked with families of UCLA Latino students to integrate family and academic life. He co-directed the Exceptional Children Tutorial Project and volunteered as a companion to abused children at Maclaren Hall.
There can be little doubt that Roque Ramirez, a psychology major who plans to earn a doctorate in Latin American history, is poised to make a significant contribution to his field of expertise.
