Justin Miyamoto has taken his academic passions and turned them into a future career and a way to help others. A biochemistry major, Justin has been involved, both on-campus and off, in medical and health-related organizations. Miyamoto has been certified by the West Los Angeles Chapter of the Red Cross to lead certification courses on adult, infant, and child CPR, and emergency first aid. Also, Miyamoto has been involved in Best Buddies, an organization which facilitates one-on-one friendship between college students and developmentally disabled high school students. Miyamoto became friends with Chris, a boy who suffered from developmental epilepsy, and although their visits were intended to help Chris, Miyamoto got just as much out of their friendship. Most recently, Miyamoto has been a representative of the world-renowned UCLA AIDS Institute, where he will design and implement large scale activism events aimed to spread HIV/AIDS education and awareness. As an aspiring doctor, Miyamoto believes that AIDS activism is in his future. “It may be research, it may be community outreach…at this point, I can not say for certain. But I can say that each time I become more involved in the cause, my passion deepens. Whatever I do later in life, I want to do something great, but I find nothing greater or more rewarding than taking care of and improving.
