Katherine King

“If the best teachers aspire not only to impart a certain set of facts to their students, but to awaken in them a lifelong desire for intellectual inquiry, then Professor King is one of the very best teachers I have known.” These words come from an undergraduate alumna in Comparative Literature. Few university instructors operate so effectively at each level of instruction – lower division, upper division and graduate.

Professor King’s strong background in classical literature enables her to bring perspectives from early thought and apply them to modern materials. Her impact on her students is reflected: “…drove me to reconsider many beliefs about myself, my relationships and my understanding about life in general…primarily the result of the strong, individualistic leadership given by Professor King…” Her commitment to her students is exemplified by the fact that she has single-handedly helped several to complete their work against all odds…by giving her own time, energy and spirit to help them over the final hurdles.

Few faculty are directly involved in the time-consuming process of training the teachers of the future. Katherine King trains and supervises the teaching assistants in the Program in Comparative Literature and has done so for the past several years. She not only teaches but also is available to the teaching assistant for discussion of any issues or problems in their classrooms.
