Earning exceptional marks at the School of Law was just the beginning for Kimberly Barlow. She has demonstrated a deep, longstanding concern for victims of child abuse and neglect, turning her considerable talents to improving their situation. She was one of just 13 students campus-wide chosen for the Interdisciplinary Child Abuse and Neglect Training Program, her professor describing her as “so committed and hardworking that her accomplishments went far beyond the efforts of other participants.” Barlow also provided valuable consultation to the UCLA Medical Center Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect (SCAN) team and policy board on which she served.

As a member of the policy board subcommittee, Barlow investigated the legal rights and obligations of the UCLA Hospital in cases of drug-related fetal demise, helping to establish a protocol in such cases. She presented her findings at an invitational conference attended by some 100 professionals. Barlow is also president and cofounder of the Coalition for Child Care, an affiliated student organization dedicated to establishing and funding an on-site child care center at the law school.

While a student, Barlow commuted three hours a day between UCLA and Orange County, where she lives with her husband and small daughter. In spite of their busy schedules, Barlow and her husband welcomed a troubled teenage boy into their home on weekends to offer him the love and sense of family he so desperately needs. Barlow represents a rare combination of intellectual vigor and profound concern for the well-being of the young people in her community.
