Most students who come to UCLA learn techniques of expository writing once they get here. Kwame Granderson, however, has also started to teach them, not only writing a book on the subject but developing a series of workshops to help underrepresented students master the fundamentals of writing.

A Regents’ Scholar, Alumni Association Distinguished Scholar, National Congressional Scholar and member of the Honors Program, among many other honors, Kwame quickly established himself as a stellar student. Professors who have worked with him invariably cite his extraordinary curiosity, diligence, mental acuity and ability to master difficult material.

On campus, Kwame has served as the Academic Advancement Program member of the Committee for the Reconfiguration of the Honors Program and is a member of the Honors Student Council. He has also been part of the TriMentor Program, which brings together a UCLA alumnus, UCLA student and high school student to provide support and guidance for three years, and he chaired the Academic Committee for the program during his senior year. In addition, Kwame serves as a mentor in the African Brothers and Sisters program.

Out in the community, Kwame has worked as a real estate agent and has created a department within his agency that locates run-down buildings in depressed areas and facilitates their renovation as housing for low-income families.

Currently working on a play dramatizing the conflicts between the African-American and Jewish communities, Kwame is a young man of boundless energy, passion and talent – one who surely is destined for academic stardom.
