Lisa Miyake is a communication studies and Asian American studies double major. Lisa dedicates herself to helping underrepresented minorities, and wants to “ensure that the rights of minorities are not violated, and help attain social equality for minority groups in the United States.”

Lisa is a resident assistant in Dykstra Hall. The residents of the ninth floor of Dykstra are like her family, and she says “being a part of the Dykstra 9 community is an amazing way to finish off my UCLA career.”

Currently, Lisa is working as a research intern at Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics and a marketing intern for Student Legal Services. In 2004, she played an important part as a political and economic affairs intern for the American Consulate General Osaka-Kobe.

Lisa has been involved with research at UCLA. From the expansion of sushi restaurants in the U.S. to gender dialectical differences in American Standard English, Lisa has tackled questions and issues, and emerged with interesting and relevant research. For her senior thesis for Communication Studies departmental honors, Lisa has focused on the Japanese Latin American redress movement. Though most Japanese American internees were able to obtain redress and reparations in the 1990s, there are still individuals of Japanese descent who were interned during World War II who did not receive any redress. Her research concentrates on the Japanese-Americans who are currently seeking redress for the injustice they experienced.

Lisa is graduating from UCLA summa cum laude, with college honors and departmental honors. Upon graduation, she will conduct research in Japan on a Fulbright Fellowship and join the Teach For America Los Angeles corps. She plans to attend law school and eventually pursue a career in attaining social equality and justice for Asian Americans.
