Hayk Matevosyan '13Hayk Matevosyan '13 is one of 48 directors from around the world selected to travel in May to the Amazon jungle in Peru, where each will make a short film under the guidance of legendary director Werner Herzog.

Matevosyan immigrated to the U.S. from Armenia with his family at the age of 17. Since graduating from the School of Theatre, Film, and Television, Matevosyan has gone on to direct a number of music videos and short films under the guidance of his mentor Mardik Martin, who wrote the screenplays for some of Martin Scorsese’s most iconic films ("New York, New York," "Raging Bull," "Mean Streets").

Matevosyan’s first short film, Սիրիա, Սեր Իմ ("Syria, My Love"), was an official selection in eleven film festivals, winning the Special Jury Award at The Pomegranate Film Festival in Toronto. His short film, “The Passenger,” has been accepted for eight film festivals. The music video he directed for Bei Ru, inspired by Jodorowsky’s “The Holy Mountain,” screened at the Austin Music Video Festival and Sarajevo Fashion Film Festival.

In the summer of 2017, as one of 10 directors selected out of about 1200 applicants to the Cici Film Festival’s Director’s Lab program, he traveled to Sicily to make a short film over a period of 12 days. The film he made there, “3 Men and A Dog,” was shot with non-professional local actors, yet won “Best Short Film” and “Audience Choice Award” at the festival.
