Graduating summa cum laude and a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Marc Shomer's undergraduate honor thesis and graduate master's thesis involved basic research on the neurophysiology and neurochemistry underlying seizure activity in patients with epilepsy.

His Ph.D. dissertation was on mechanisms of brain repair that may offer new and exciting methods for treating the brain damage suffered in stroke or movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease.

His most recent research is in the field of ophthalmology – pioneering research studying ways to repair the retina after damage and explore new treatments to increase vision after blinding diseases.

Shomer graduated with a combined M.D. and Ph.D. from UCLA's School of Medicine, his dissertation research focusing on how the brain re-wires after injury to find new treatments to increase recovery from brain damage.

In addition to his extraordinary academic and scholarship achievements, Shomer has given back to the community by helping other students with learning disabilities as a volunteer tutor.

Shomer is deeply committed to a career in which he can help others through the medical training he received at UCLA and will be starting his residency in ophthalmology at the UCLA Jules Stein Eye Institute.
