Martin Pops returned to UCLA for postgraduate medical training after obtaining his M.D. from the University of Chicago. Fortunately for his alma mater, Pops never left! After serving as the chief resident in internal medicine and completing a fellowship in gastroenterology, he joined the faculty as an assistant professor of medicine. He attained full professorship in 1978. He has served as assistant dean of student affairs for the UCLA School of Medicine and currently serves as associated dean of student affairs. Pops is a role model, particularly as a clinical teacher, mentor and promoter of young physicians. He is a distinguished teacher of medicine and his extraordinary skill therein has been recognized many times. He has received the Golden Apple Award, the Senior Graduating Class Award for Teaching in Clinical Sciences and the UCLA School of Medicine Excellence in Education Award. The latter is the highest, most prestigious award the UCLA School of Medicine awards its educators and physician role models.

Pops is recognized nationally and internationally as an educator, academician and student affairs dean. He has been selected and elected to many regional and national positions in the Association of American Medical Colleges and its subgroups. Because of his broad involvement in education, it is sometimes difficult to express his exceptional contributions to UCLA.

He has the responsibility for assuring acceptance of students of the highest caliber while simultaneously remaining sensitive to the needs of a diverse student population. During his tenure, UCLA has established its reputation as having a student body of breadth, depth and quality – an extraordinary professional achievement to have affected the lives of thousands of students while advancing the quality reputation of the UCLA School of Medicine.

An active physician during these past 29 years, Pops continues seeing patients with difficult medical problems. He is esteemed as a consultant by his colleagues in other departments and beloved by his patients.
