Nadia Powers ’84
Nadia Powers is an anthropology major whose personal history is a tribute to the indomitability of the human spirit. Her triumphant achievements inspire every member of the UCLA family.
Having overcome severe vision impairment, she maintains and shares an enthusiastic, constructive approach to living. Powers is a founding member and current vice chair of the Chancellor’s Advisory Committee on the Disabled. Her senior thesis, “Adaptation of Disabled Students to UCLA,” was the basis for the committee’s initial inquiry into accessibility issues and other crucial needs of this important segment of the campus population.
Powers’ love of people finds further expression through her work in the community services of the Los Angeles Archdiocese. She assists in providing food for the needy and gives friendly support and encouragement to the infirm. Powers raised five children (four of whom are University of California alumni) before she undertook the academic challenge of UCLA. A 1983 recipient of the UCLA Alumni Association’s Distinguished Scholar Award, Powers graduated summa cum laude with departmental honors.
