Ray W. Bartlett ’44
For more than 50 years, Ray Bartlett has contributed to the betterment of his community. His involvement with the Pasadena YMCA – as president, chairman of the Board of Managers, Membership Drive chairman – with numerous volunteer responsibilities in between – is one indicator of his service. In 1983 Bartlett was given the Golden Goblet Award by the Los Angeles County youth & recreation services and in 1985 he was recognized as the “Y” Man of the Year by the Pasadena YMCA.
Ray has shared his talents over the years with such groups as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the American Legion. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity claims him as past president and, since 1980, he has served on the UCLA Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship Selection Committee.
Appointed by County Supervisor Michael Antonovich in 1980 to the County Human Relations Commission, he is a past president. In 1987 he was the first recipient of the President’s Service Award from Pasadena City College, serving also on their Foundation Board of Directors. His years of involvement with the Kiwanis Club of Pasadena include service as president of that community group.
The first African Methodist Episcopal Church has had the benefit of Bartlett’s presence on the Board of Trustees, as chair of the Building Committee, chair of Men’s Day programs, treasurer, Sunday school teacher and Sunday School superintendent. Ray Bartlett has given and continues to give of himself to our world; it is fitting that he be honored with the Community Service Award.
