Terry Friedman ’71
Four years ago, Terry Friedman was elected to the State Assembly. Both in and out of the legislature, he has established himself as a staunch supporter of UCLA, which lies within the boundaries of his 43rd District. Friedman received his bachelor’s degree in American studies from UCLA. Although he went on to earn his J.D. from Boalt Hall School of Law at UC Berkeley, he is currently a member of the board of directors of the UCLA Public Interest Law Foundation and a member of the UCLA Alumni Association.
As a lawmaker, Friedman has supported education, health care and public safety issues, while working to ensure prison terms for those convicted in gang-related crimes. Last year, Friedman took a leadership role in helping UCLA secure state funding so that the new John E. Anderson Graduate School of Management building project could move forward. Ever concerned about the less fortunate, Friedman served as a staff attorney with the Western Center for Law and Poverty. Immediately prior to his election to the assembly, Friedman was executive director of Bet Tzedek Legal Services, a Jewish community agency providing legal aid to low-income and elderly people. Under Friedman, the agency grew from a storefront operation to a well-respected institution serving some 8,000 clients per year.
Friedman has a long and faithful record of community service. Now in his second term in the assembly, Friedman has proven himself to be a principled, warm-hearted public servant whose legislative activities have improved the quality of life of the people of California.
