Perry Treadwell '55, Ph.D. '58Perry Edward Treadwell '55, Ph.D. '58, passed away June 25 at age 86. Raised in Wausau, WI, the only child of Wilma and Paul Treadwell, he graduated from Shattuck Military Academy in Faribault, MI, before attending UCLA, where he received his B.A. in medicine and earned a Ph.D. in microbiology. Treadwell was a postdoctoral fellow at the UCLA Brain Research Institute and the University of Minnesota Cell Research Program; professor at Emory University; advisor to the Centers for Disease Control; and a junior fellow at the Salk Institute.

Following his academic career, Treadwell achieved what he termed “a full bucket list” of goals. Among these, he was a part-owner of the Little 5 Points Community Pub, a founder of the Atlanta Men’s Experience, and a volunteer with many groups, including the Georgia Conservancy, Grady Hospice and AID Atlanta. He was a member of Atlanta Friends Meeting, where he had served as clerk, as well as on committees at Friends General Conference. Treadwell served as a war tax witness for 40 years, convener of Simple Living workshops, and most recently, as a docent at the CDC museum. Author of eight books, Treadwell also wrote for newspapers and magazines. He visited all 50 states - and many countries - and participated in two barefoot sails to the Bahamas.

Treadwell is survived by his wife, Judith Greenberg, son Gilbert Treadwell and daughters Gail Holland (Clay), Sally Treadwell and Susan Treadwell (Linda), as well as granddaughters Sarah Stegall, Amanda Chow and Amy Clower and great-grandchildren Rosalie and Ethan Chow and Andrew and Claire Stegall. A memorial service will be held at Atlanta Friends Meeting. Donations in Perry’s memory can be made to the Atlanta Friends Meeting.
